Vehicle Registration Renewal Options in Virginia

You will receive a renewal notice in the mail before your Virginia registration expires. If you wish, you can opt-in to receive notifications by email or text.

There are several ways to renew your Virginia vehicle registration. You can renew:

• Online.
• By Mail.
• In person at a customer service center or Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) select office.

Renew VA Registrations Online

Renewing your Virginia car registration online will save you money. Everyone that renews online will get a discount of $1. Renewing for multiple years at a time will save you an additional dollar for each year (maximum 3 years for a total of $4 saved).

To renew your Virginia Vehicle registration online, visit the DMV online portal and provide your:

• Title number.
• Last for digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

OR

• Sign in to your MyDMV account.

If your registration expires within 15 days or has expired for less than 90 days, be sure to print out your internet receipt to keep in your car when you drive.

It may take up to 15 days for you to receive your registration and decals in the mail.

Renew Your Virginia Registration by Mail

To renew your vehicle registration by mail:

• Make sure everything on your registration notice is correct. If not, call (804) 497-7100 to fix it.
• Fill out and sign the form.
• Provide payment in the form of a check or money order.

Renew Your VA Registration in Person

You can renew your registration in person at:

• DMV select centers.
• DMV customer service centers.
• DMV mobile locations.

When you renew in person, you may be asked to provide your:

• Title number.
• VIN.
• Driver’s license.
• Payment for the renewal fee. The VA DMV accepts:
  • Cash.
  • Check or money order.
  • Major credit cards.
  • Check cards.

  Virginia Registration Renewal Fees

  Virginia residents can save $1 per year by renewing for multiple years at a time (up to 3 years). Renewing online will save you an additional $1. Renewal fees are as follows:

  • Passenger vehicles:
    • 4,000 pounds or less: $30.75 per year.
    • 4,001 to 6,500 pounds: $35.75 per year.
    • 4,001 to 6,500 pounds: $35.75 per year.
    • 6,501 to 10,000 pounds: $44.75 per year.
